I love writing for my blog. I HATE trying to keep my site updated, up-to-date, and secure.

I used to create a WordPress blog, and host it myself. That’s fine if you’re trying to learn web design, but eventually you have a business to run. Even though WordPress is easy to install, there are plenty of details that are easy to overlook:

• Keeping WordPress Secure: WordPress is a super popular publishing platform. This is great, because there’s a vibrant community, and lots of plug-ins available for it. • Keeping WordPress Backed Up: Stuff happens. I’ve been blogging since 2004, so I have tons of posts and comments. Years worth. I shudder to think what it would be like to lose all of it. But, setting up a reliable backup system is a pain.
• Keeping WordPress Up-to-Date: Since WordPress is a popular target for hackers, there are frequent updates to WordPress to keep those hackers out of the code. The problem is, you actually have to keep WordPress up-to-date to reap the benefits.
• Keeping WordPress Optimized: With enough hard work, you can do all of your WordPress optimization yourself. It’s great if you can get your pages loading blazingly fast, because Google even takes pageload time into account when ranking sites.
• Other things: If you’re administering your own server, there are tons of other details that you have to make sure are working, and it’s easy to forget. I once had my own server, and it was quite a while before I realized I wasn’t getting any notification emails for new comments. Why? Because you have to install and configure some mail script or server thingy or WordPress won’t send emails. Don’t ask me more about it, because that’s all I know. I never did figure it out.

Doing all of the above stuff sucks. Writing for my blog, on the other hand, is fun. I don’t want to spend time worrying about any of the stuff above. I want to spend time writing. That’s the whole point.
